Ironkids Triathlon
A great way for kids to stay active & healthy!
The Ironkids triathlon series begain in 1985 and over 40,000 kids have participated in events that are held at various locations around the country. Even Lance Armstrong participated in the Ironkids triathlon series. This series of triathlons is owned and licensed by the World Triathlon Corporation.
The categories that the kids can enter are divided by both gender and age group. The age groups are as follows:
- 6-8 years old – called “Juniors”
- 9-11 years old – called “Intermediate”
- 12-15 years old – called “Seniors”
The race distances are as follows:
| Division | Swim | Bike | Run |
| Juniors (6-8 years old) | 50 yards | 2 miles | 500 yards |
| Intermediate (9-11 years old) | 150 yards | 4 miles | 1 mile |
| Seniors (12-15 years old) | 300 yards | 8 miles | 2 miles |
These events are very safe for the children. There are always a lot of volunteers throughout the course. The swim section of these kid friendly events feature adults in kayaks and paddle boards, life guards and a myriad of adult volunteers all looking out for safety of the children. Both the bike and the run portions of the courses are on a close course – so there is no traffic to worry about, and again, there are volunteers everywhere to ensure a fun and safe event.
These events are very much friendly competitions. Every child that finishes is a winner, and everyone who competes in the event is award a finishers tee shirt, a goodie bag and a finishers medal.
